Educational Game

This is the game prototype developed for the Educational Game Design class. As an avid gamer myself, I entered the class with the desire to learn more about gamification and how to teach through games. I learned that the balance of playing and learning is delicately balanced a tightrope walk- Too much of the education aspect and it becomes dull, too much gaming aspect and becomes purely fun.

My team of three created a demo of a survival-based educational game. This tutorial level was created in under 30 days after two-months of planning. The idea was born from our collective pandemic stress. Would we be prepared to brave the wild if society collapsed? Through intentional brainstorming, wireframing, and avatar development our group created the story for The Last Stand. The goal of the game is to survive the day, by using in-game resources to maintain your hydration, nutrition, and overall health. A comprehensive field guide provides helpful clues based on the real-life action that should be taken.

Construct 3 was the engine selected as it allowed versatility in game mechanics while allowing beginner game-designers the ability to fully create a 2D game. Our team had no coding background, but was able to learn on the go to develop the game. We utilized GitHub to create a shared repository and push updated.

Play “The Last Stand” on the Scirra Arcade or view a Developer’s Diary of our Process.

Skills Utilized: Project management, basic Javascript coding, Construct 3, GitHub, wireframing, storyboarding
